I wanted to grab a coffee before work this morning and I’ve heard great things about this place so I wanted to check it out.
I remember hearing about a coffee shop that was closing and relocating, but I did not know it was this one. The doors were wide open, and the side of the building had in large letters that they were open. So I walked inside and I started to look at the menu. This blonde older lady rudely said to me “You know we’re closed right???” I was taken aback by the rudeness and I said sorry for walking in, as I didn’t know because the doors were wide open! If she kindly told me that they were closed that would be a different story, but she was acting like it was so obvious they were closed and I was supposed to know like I was a regular.
I thought maybe they’re opening in an hour or something so I asked her, “What time are you open?” and she rudely replied, “We’re permanently closed”
She didn’t mention anything about the new location, she didn’t even say “Bye” or have good day” 🙁 She probably didn’t want me showing up at the other location either.
I personally believe that she was being racist towards me as I am a person of color and she was white. I just find it funny that there was a poster saying that EVERYONE is welcome regarding race, sexual orientation, religion, etc. I truly DID NOT FEEL WELCOME.
Your new customers could be your new regulars, if only you did not do such a poor job at simply welcoming people.
Do better.

I just want to start off by saying I’m not a local so I did a lot of research of where to eat. This place had wonderful reviews but I had no idea what to eat. So I ordered my two drinks then asked for the most popular item, he told me it’s the burrito. Coming from Arizona, maybe I have high expectations for burritos but this burrito was undercook. The tortilla was so doughy that chewing it was the cheese was completely unpleasant that I tossed the $7 burrito. For something that is the most popular, I really thought oh this must be the thing. No the show stopper for my was the drinks. I’ll come back but probably skip the food now

I was introduced to this coffee shop from a dear friend about eight years ago and whenever I’m in the area, I try to stop by. It’s often pretty packed on the weekends as they offer a vegan brunch that’s pretty popular. Drinks are always good and there is a lot of space for tables so if it’s popular, at least you’re not cramped in there.

There is plenty of seating in this place but it gets crowded since this is a community hot spot. The service is friendly, warm, and very welcoming. They have great drinks, including the chagaccino. If you’ve never had one, try it. Personally, I thought it was good but I’ve also had a better version elsewhere (that’s the reason for 4/5 starts). I also recommend the olive oil citrus cake (light, fluffy, and moist).

Parking can be a pain since you’re limited to the streets. There’s a lot behind the coffee shop but there’s a 2 hour limit. I came here to get some work done and while they have wifi, it gets loud. If that’s the case, I’d head to the back of the shop for additional seating and working space. Plugs are limited though so bring a portable charger if you have one. They also offer outdoor seating which comes in handy if you don’t mind being right next to the street.

I met up with a friend here one afternoon because Portfolio Coffeehouse is smack in the middle, and I’m so glad we ended up going here. Let me start by saying the inside is absolutely perfect. There are many cozy spaces for sitting, writing, reading, drawing, or whatever else your heart desires. The staff is also extremely friendly. We ordered coffee, lemonade, a sandwich, and an acai bowl. All were excellent. My favorite part of this experience was the clientele. They were upbeat and diverse, and it felt like a comfortable space where everyone was welcome. I feel like that’s not too common in some regions of Southern California, but I LOVED the overall vibe here. We literally can’t wait to come back!

Walking my new neighborhood, went in with Julia the Wonder Mutt to order then realized I didn’t have money.

Walked back home and dropped mutt and headed back.

A perfect iced Americano with xtra half and half and a yummy jalapeño quiche.

The sweet man behind the counter was so nice when I came back, then forgot my credit card at the counter, then reminded me that they were heating the quiche when I asked if he had forgotten.

Thanks for the caffeine and the gentle guidance after a 3 day move! Be back for sure.

33 years later, and STILL a great cup of coffee, and personable people behind the counter. The owner has done one hell of a job through thick and thin, and has created in institution in the ever changing city of Long Beach.

Cheers. Amazing Cafe, Amazing Owner.
