Used to be a Berkeley landmark, I understand they’re remodeling but paying this much to sit in a parking lot for food devoid of flavor and heat is not worthwhile.
This place was fantastic in 2018
A surprisingly fun spot, Picante is currently open for Takeout with food delivered to their patio with a heated covered area if you like.
The food is good and a good value. I recommend ordering ahead.
This is an easy place for a group and the outdoor space is dog friendly.
We had a good experience with the staff. We ordered the burrito manchamanteles with extra beans and two pork tamales a la carte style and enjoyed them thoroughly. The food seems somewhat healthy while also being delicious. The bill was ~$22.
This place may seem like they provide a good service to their customers, but they have poor kitchen staff management. So sad to learn the maltreatment some staff receive, and all only to receive recognition. Like I said it’s sad, and I’m not trying to prove anything other than maybe my review will make an impact on someone and decide whether or not to participate in this hierarchy.
Food is good. Drive up is great but prices are a little high. I do like the tortillas.
Adore PICANTE! They now have a large tent covered outdoor space for eating. We always order the enchiladas de mole w black beans
Zero ambiance, food is mediocre and you eat in a parking lot. Not the Picante I was used to.
We like the food but feel terrible about the amount of trash we generate. The trash this place produces is astronomical. They say all of the cutlery and plastic containers are compostable and recyclable which seems hard to believe. It will take many years for that plastic to break down. Why cant they use regular dishes and room service food covers to keep food warm and stop this mound of trash from accumulating? Until that happens CIAO.
A wonderful experience that I enjoyed twice during a short visit to the area. The service is incredibly fast, but it is the quality of the food that makes Picante a superb destination. Look forward to many return visits.
Taste is gone. Just had the steak plate with rice and black beans. Everything was bland and the chipotle sauce was very sour. I very seldom reach for the salt, but this plate needed it. I have been going here for 20 years. I stopped going since the kitchen remodel. And then I forget or I think, maybe (after a 3-4 months) it would taste better. But I was wrong. So I think this is final my last time. I won’t come back until the restaurant is fully open with a new kitchen and hopefully, better chefs.
My usual go to is the cochinita pibil bowl. Slow roasted pork with rice and black beans. They top it with pickled red onions and you can get it “super” which means with sour cream and guacamole but I like it as is.
My spouse either gets the fish tacos or a half order of nachos (it’s BIG).
I get a plain flour quesadilla for my picky toddler because if he doesn’t eat it, I can reheat it the next day to offer and it’s still good.
There’s a very convenient drive up to pay and pick up takeout. I would turn from Gilman.
They turned one of their huge parking lots into ample, tented outdoor seating, too.
The food is fresh. The agua frescas are BOMB. I highly recommend!!!
