Perry and Margie,

We are a non-profit based in San Francisco.

On 11/17, three weeks in advance of our event, I contacted Margie Butler to secure a reservation for a table of 12 to honor and roast our 91-year-old fifth generation San Franciscan and the founder of our non-profit.

A board member recommended Perry’s, a San Francisco institution, and said there was a private room, a must to hear speeches.

Margie responded with:

“Hi Susan, We would be happy to host your dinner to honor your founder.  I assume would you like a regular reservation for the back Enclosed Patio versus booking it privately and committing to a food and beverage minimum? We currently have availability on Friday, December 9th at 6 pm. Best, Margie”

This felt too good to be true…..

On 12/7, two days prior to the event, with speeches and hours of preparation, I received the following email from Margie stating that the far less noisy enclosed patio was now “booked by another party.” I was assured that the back room was “still quieter than the main room,” and indeed, that was not the case.

12/7 email from Margie:

“Hi Susan, We did have a group commit to a private gathering on Friday evening, so we may need to set you up in the Back Room versus the Patio, but both spaces are quieter than the main dining area so it should work out nicely for your group. Best, Margie”

The evening and the noise level provided for a disaster. Our honoree, 91-years-young and with a hearing deficit, could not hear speeches.  There were two very loud tables of 8-10 adjacent to us.

Indeed, this did not “work out nicely,” as Margie had assured me. This was truly a disappointment.  As the reservation holder of the Enclosed Patio, we were not told that the room could be pulled from us within 48 hours of our event.

I guess in the cut throat restaurant business and even a seasoned restauranteur, that reservations are tentative  when a better and more lucrative offer comes along.  🙁

Walt from Walt’s Adventures reporting from San Francisco.  I did some adventuring in the city and found myself revisiting Perry’s Restaurant.
We were immediately seated and just minutes later, we found waters at our tables.
My companions each ordered the Southwest and the Cobb Salads.  These salads were amazing because there was nothing left but empty bowels at the end of our meal.

I ordered the Cheesesteak with red and green peppers.  I chose not to include onions nor mushrooms on this venture.
The  sandwich was cooked to perfection. The peppers were not overwhelming and the meat was flavorful. What impressed me most was the bread.  It was toasted just enough that it complemented the meal and wasn’t a distraction.
My experience with these sandwiches were limited but I will say that any future Cheesesteaks have large plates to fill.

Cornbread was my chosen side dish.  4 out of 5 stars because these were savory and did not possess the usual sweetness that one expects with this side.  These were incredibly good… warm and filled with dedication of a tenured chef.
For my personal tastes, I just prefer sweet over savory.

It is obvious that this eatery has not only dedicated itself to treating it’s guests like owners but has also focused its soul to providing some of the best food in what will forever be know as… the city

The food is fantastic here. It’s a fun pub like atmosphere. Lots of different types of beer. I’m bummed they took out the steak sandwich but still pretty delicious food. We’ve been going here for a long time and will be back for sure.

Perry’s on Union is a staple if you are craving  traditional American food done right.

The Cobb Salad was fantastic and the portion size was perfect. Great as an entree for one person or to share for two with another dish.

While we ordered a medium burger, it came back a bit too rare and we had to ask the kitchen to cook it a bit more. We were a bit nervous to do so / didn’t want to cause issues but the kitchen and our server were incredibly nice and understanding about it that it caused no issues. Thank you for the great service 🙂

Overall, this place is pretty standard.  If you just get a burger, it’s fine but not the best burger you’ve had.  The food isn’t anything innovative or spectacular but it’s consistently ok.  The atmosphere is great but I’ve always felt excluded when I go here.  It seems like if you are just getting a simple meal and not racking up a huge bill, they pay less attention to you.

We came here to celebrate my daughter’s 12th birthday and it was great. I’ve been coming here for decades, and it always feels like a treat. The staff is attentive and friendly, the food is always fresh and tasty and the vibe is so classic.

Very appreciative for the referral by our hotel. Made a 745pm Friday reservation for 4 and was seated right away. Choice of inside or outside parklets. Old style pub, full bar and memorabilia all over the walls. We had roasted artichokes, onion soup au gratan, wedge salad, fish and ribs. Plenty of libation choices too. Server was attentive and friendly.  Highly recommended.  Enjoy!

The fish is not fresh!  Smells very fishy. Don’t order fish dishes! I don’t recommend this restaurant.
