The standouts on this menu are the pozole, mini tacos and the enchiladas mole and my rating is for just those three things. Anything else, I can’t really vouch for. The guacamole is good and fresh.  Their regular tacos are not as good as the minis and their refritos are decent. The salsa’s are available in red and green, I just wish they were thicker. Most rating systems don’t really work for my type of review because I’m product specific and my true rating is 3 1/2.

We dropped in to La Placita (located right next to Boulder Coffee in the Public Market) Saturday morning when we couldn’t figured out what we wanted for a late breakfast. We hadn’t had the best experiences there in the past but figured I would give them another shot and add them to Yelp at the same time.

This was my kind of breakfast order: 2 tacos (pork and breakfast) and 2 tamales (chicken). Unfortunately, the tacos we got were more like mini unwrapped burritos than the kind of tacos that I prefer since they were both topped with beans, shredded cheddar cheese, shredded lettuce and pico de gallo. Meh. The flour tortillas were warmed up nicely but they were still flour tortillas. The breakfast taco had a minuscule amount of eggs and potatoes and was easily the worst item we had. I think there could have been a hint of sausage but I only noticed one piece that might have been sausage in the whole taco. The full flavored carnitas in the pork taco was the highlight of the meal; not the best I’ve ever had but rock solid and I was happy to get it in my taco.

The tamales were filled with dark meat chicken and a red sauce of sorts. There was no appreciable flavor to the sauce so I can’t comment on what it was. The masa was cooked well, very tender and a bit under seasoned. Similar situation with the dark meat chicken inside. It was almost acceptable and could have been decent with some proper seasoning.

We also sampled two of their salsas (green and red) and some chips. The chips were cold and uninspiring and the salas were both middling at best. The green was overly watery and while it had some spice, the only other flavor that came through was cilantro. The red was the better of the two, although still not particularly good, with some smoke flavor to match up with the dominating tomatoes and nothign else really came through.

La Placita had a few redeeming characteristics and if I was in the mood I could see stopping by to try some more carnitas or sample their empanadas or their tasty looking desserts.
