We were travelling and looking for a spot that offered outdoor dining. There aren’t always a lot of choices, so it can be hit or miss. This was definitely a hit. We started with drinks and the queso fundido which came bubbling to the table and was decadent and delicious. I had a Jalapeno basil margarita which I would definitely order again. We ordered the Salmon Tacos which again were delicious with a more then a hint of spice. The Cochinita Pibil Taco Platter had a generous amount of pork and was very flavorful. I was too stuffed to order the dulche de leche, but the folks at the next table got it and were very happy. The waitress was eager to please. A total hit. We will definitely be back.
A very cute little Mexican restaurant in the Old Town area of Takoma Park – walkable by metro or plenty of street parking in the area.
We made a reservation for 6 people on Sunday afternoon. There were no indoor reservations available (it’s a very small interior with only a few tables), so we sat outside. Even though it was 30-40 degrees outside, the covered patio and heat lamp combination actually kept us all quite warm.
The menu is very expansive and has the best selection of vegan and vegetarian dishes that I’ve ever seen for a Mexican restaurant. Pretty much anything on the menu can be made vegan! Our server was very sweet and kind, going above and beyond to accommodate our requests of making everything extra spicy- bringing out extra jalapeños and hot sauces.
The food itself was 4/5 star worthy. I highly recommend anything with the nopales- the taco and tostada were both delicious! However, in general, all of the salsas that came with our food (trio of salsas, the salsa on the enchiladas) were pretty bland and super mild. If you like heat, this is definitely not the place for you. The tacos could’ve used some salsa as well, and I would skip the papas con rajas taco next time as it was the most bland dish I tried. The vegan horchata (not pictured) was very tasty, and the drink menu is definitely worth checking out. Our favorite dessert was the tres leches – a MUST try if you come here.
Overall, service and menu options were great, but the food was not the most flavorful and there weren’t many standouts. Good option for vegan food, but I wouldn’t rank it high for Mexican restaurants in the area.
Delicious! I was really blown away at this menu and everything we ordered was fantastic. We started with the house margarita, and the presentation was beautiful. The flautas de camote were great, and i got vegetarian enchiladas which i would definitely recommend. I ended up only eating half and was able to bring the rest to work with me the next day. It was my birthday and they heard us talking about it so they surprised me with a tres leches cake, amazing! I can’t wait to go back to this gem. I will note that we went on a cold, rainy, monday night and didn’t know what to expect. Upon entry we were asked to show our vaccine cards and thank goodness we all had them saved as photos in our phone or else we would have had to dine elsewhere.
The mark of an authentic Mexican kitchen is mole, and Cielo Rojo doesn’t disappoint. There were a few logistical hitches the evening we visited, but all melted away after tasting the mole.
It’s a cozy, colorful spot. Nice for meeting friends and family. As of this writing, the restaurant is requiring vaccination cards and ID for seating. I like that! Nothing wrong with erring on the side of caution.
Cocktails are varied and potent. 🙂 Food offerings are fresh. I’m not a fan of their tortillas but the sauces are delicious and meat and vegetables dishes are well prepared.
The restaurant has a time limit for tables (1.5 hours). Not unreasonable for a small, busy space. But there must be a more gracious way to move guests along than the host abruptly announcing, with 15 minutes left on our time, “My next guests are coming!” and waving us away from the table. A more gracious notice would have ended our visit more pleasantly.
A quintessential hole in the wall with remarkable food and an attentive eclectic wait staff that is considerate and knowledgeable. If you like authentic Mexican cuisine that is the antithesis of commercial fair this is the place for you!
Have been wanting to try this spot since I read about the owners’ ties to Gracias Madre in SF (one of my most favorite places). It’s super hard to find vegan Mexican options that aren’t just basic mushroom, cauliflower or cactus tacos (which I love, but can easily make at home). Thank goodness for this little spot in Takoma Park that offers up creative and delicious dishes that make you feel like they actually care about making your tastebuds dance and belly full. I absolutely loved the vegan enchiladas (with the mushrooms) and devoured every bite. The strawberry margarita was also exactly right flavor wise; refreshing and tangy and sweet. The only miss was the guac – it had zero flavor (not even enough salt). Will definitely be returning to explore their other veg options. Excited that they are expanding as well with a burrito shop!
Ordered here twice now for delivery. The chicken enchiladas are some of the BEST I’ve had. The chicken tinga inside is so flavorful and well seasoned, the salsa verde is bright and citrusy, and the queso fresco is creamy and fresh. I appreciate the scoop of guacamole, and i never used to like pinto beans until I tried these!! The drunken mushroom taco is also surprisingly delicious. Amazing authentic food!!
An excellent place for Mexican-style brunch on a Saturday morning. The food was flavorful, satisfying and authentic and the service was great. I would recommend calling ahead to make a reservation since this place is very popular– I will definitely be back!
The food is so good. It really feels home!!! I order the enchiladas verdes and it came with beans and rices and let me tell you it was so good… You can tell the tortilla is hand made and the frijoles tastes like they’re from olla..
