Each week, we’re spotlighting the story of one of our writers who spends time telling the tales of others. This week, we’re happy to introduce you to Betsy Floyd.
Hometown / Current Residence
Tacoma, WA / Los Angeles, CA
When did you know that you wanted to be a writer? Were there any early experiences you had that confirmed this path?
I always enjoyed making up stories and my teachers recognized my abilities when I was in grade school, which felt very validating and helped propel me towards making it my ultimate career.
What have you liked about writing for Hyperflyer?
I enjoy interviewing people not just in the restaurant culture, but also those beyond the city who are integral to providing food for everyone in the country. I love hearing their stories and learning about their life and convictions.
Outside of Hyperflyer, what else do you write? Are there any projects you are particularly fond of that you’d like to share?
How has your pandemic life been? What are you doing to stay busy and focused?
Pandemic life has brought on a new appreciation for baths, reading, and meandering walks. I’ve built a semi-routine for myself to stay on task, and I make a weekly effort to get out of the city and recharge somewhere else (preferably the outdoors).
What does supporting local mean to you, and why do you think it’s important?
Supporting local means investing in small businesses and farmers markets in my area versus relying on the convenience culture of big corporations.
